    I agree. Im 40 now. But, even in my early 30s when i was able to create a character, i usually made my character aopears mid to late 40s if i could. I'll still play games, sometimes, where the hero is a teenager or in their really early 20s. But, those games are a little bit harder for me to get into now.

    I think that this is a great discussion topic! I'm in my 40s. Dragon Quest just hit its 35th anniversary. I think that I hear mixed things from people about Dragon Quest 12 rumors. The same people who might say that they are tired of childish video games often say that they prefer dragon quest games to stay the same when they hear that DQ 12 is supposed to be darker and more adult. I think that we should be careful with what we wish for. I partly play video games for an escape from my adult dark life. I think I would like to play an adult rather than a high schooler. However, I also like escaping into colorful, cutesy worlds like that of the Dragon Quest series (as it is now). If things go too far with trying to make games "adult", I worry that it could be too close to real life.

    Games are aimed at the ages when people have disposable income. Older people have other expenses like mortgages so they won't spend as much money on them. It's just basic economics.

    I think it probably will happen, and already is. We're going to be the first wave of old people who grew up playing video games when we were kids. I seem to remember reading that the average age for someone playing video games these days is 30s, and I suspect that's why we have so many relatively mature games now. One thing I do wonder about is manual dexterity. This hadn't occurred to me until I read a blog post about it. We're already getting games with more mature themes, but there aren't many games aimed towards people with old hands. It'll happen to all of us eventually. While there are some games that don't require much manual dexterity, it's a very limited pool. I don't want to be stuck with just visual novels...

    Hello! One of my greatest games did this recently with God of War sequel reboot, which they made Kratos older and have a son, they did this without destroying the lore of the first six games. Releasing that the people who enjoyed God of War when it came out now have children and a wife/husband, they made Kratos relatable. Plus the ending in 2018 made me cry, haha. Rant incoming: My personal favourite game of all time did this in a weird way, Red Dead Redemption 2. Arthur Morgan says to, I believe, Dutch "They don't want folks like us no more." As someone who is hard adapting to the new world we live in with A.I. and VR and Cybertrucks and Neurolinks soon coming out, I find myself relating more with Arthur Morgan. He's not "old", he is a man out of time. Both literally and figuratively. Gone are the days of blockbuster and radio shack and VHS, things I had in the 2000s. So, maybe in a weird way, it's not "we're getting old", it's a "we want this to be around for our kids" things. I'm 22, I should not remember floppy disc or dial up. Yet I do. Old soul in a young body, people say to me. Solid Snake, Every Resident Evil character is aging, Kratos, Yakuza characters. I'm sure there's more but they are the ones I noticed. There's always going to be games for kids. There's always going to be games for adults. I do that time is coming soon where people will make games with older characters. Just hopefully when they do it, it's not for nostalgic purposes. There's a military veteran who plays Battlefield 2049 on UA-cam. There's a market for everything and everyone. Your 35? Dang, you look 25. Sorry for my long message, Femtrooper. I guess I had a lot to say. 😂

    I'm 43 and still enjoying gaming daily. I can still handle soulslikes OK but I can definitely feel my reaction times slow over time, I'm not sure I would be able to beat Sekiro again for instance. Thankfully I also like RPGs (of any denomination) so as long as my brain doesn't turn to mush I will probably play until I'm too frail to hold a controller or type on a keyboard. As for the relatable-ness of the story / characters I haven't really had any issues so far. When I game I just turn off myself from the equation and play as the character, wether it's male, female, a child, a teenager or a senior. I am for sure injecting part of myself into it but it's all subconscious and I'm not actively registering it, I think. In games where personality matter I never ask myself what would I do but what would I do IF I was the protagonist. I am still a huge fan of the Persona series and recently played through Persona 3 Reload and had a blast for around 100 hours, got lost in the game mechanics trying to fuse as many upgrades as I could while keeping a balanced elemental arsenal and the game went like the breeze. I chose my romantic interest based on my preferences of looks and personality, sure, but among a list of candidates, not based on who would I date IRL, maybe if I was like 16 but surely not right now. I never felt like I was part of the choice if that makes sense. I will for sure pick up Visions of Mana in a few days when I'm over the new Star Wars game and I know the protagonists are teenagers but it doesn't bother me, I'm in for the mechanics and if I don't enjoy the romantic parts of it so be it but I'm sure I'll be able to keep a coherent narrative when it comes to the MC story. That being said there are games that definitely feel too childish for me no matter how good they are but I guess it's true for everyone... I would like to play more games with mature protagonists for sure though.

    I totally get what you mean, also the industry evolved since the 90. Like you said, more and more games are M rating, older characters in them. However, us as players needs to keep an open mind as much as possible to still enjoy games where we play as a child/teen/high schooler. Otherwise we'll need to pinpoint and eliminate many games which we'rnt able to relate to. I'm confident for the futur, they want our adult money. Not everybody makes kids so they have to think about us.

    Gaming has aged with children born in the eighties. The United States had a hearing on violent video games in 1993, which the led to the creation of the ESRB. You can watch the hearing online. Games were targeted to children until the PS2. The PS1 did bring more older people in as well, but it wasn't until the PS2 that gaming became for all ages. Older people would ask me, "when are you going to outgrow video games?" This was in the early 2000s. GTA 3 did a lot outside of popularizing the open world genre. It put gaming on the map for adults. I used to play a lot of fighting games in the arcades during the mid to late 90s. You did not see a lot of women in these places either. I would fight against men and their girlfriends would say, "Let's go, you cannot win." In the late early to mid 2000s, I started hearing about women playing Halo and Quake 3. There was a huge difference between pre GTA 3 and after it came out. The only games my father played was Punch Out, and Dr Mario.

    Cool video, interesting concept, I've never really thought about it. But yeah, I think nowadays we can tell deeper stories, like The Last of Us, in games that are meant for an older audience. As long as people buy them, I think we'll still get'em. I've also noticed that since making sequels is safer than a new IP, we'll see more of our characters age, like Snake, Kratos and Sam Fisher. So that's cool too. I hope we get more of that.

    I agree with you and I enjoy older characters as well! Like a Dragon is an excellent example and I also enjoy playing more relatable characters. Death stranding is a more mature and dark game that a younger person might not find as relatable. It has deep personal relationships that it’s rare to find young people having experienced them, but not impossible. Not that it’s not a game that all ages can’t enjoy. I do think that companies take our demographic into consideration (45 year old here) or at least a medium 30 year old age, and the developers do age with us as well. On the other hand we don’t age as our parents did. We have different hobbies and interests so games keep us young. But yeah I can’t play a 16 year old, the same way I can’t watch high school tv shows anymore. Pretty little liars was great but after a couple of seasons I couldn’t continue 😅 it was a bunch of high school kids that I could relate anymore. Same applies to games.

  • @GameEscape
    @GameEscape 8 годин тому

    For me, catering to an adult audience isn't so much a question of themes or relatability, but rather of accessibility. What irks me as I get older are games that do not respect my time by not having adequate checkpoints or, better yet, the ability to save anywhere. I also believe that more games need to incorporate a Bravely Default style tweaking system where you can set encounter rates or Final Fantasy remake style cheat menus, where you can edit money, items, etc. I basically want to pace games on my terms so that I can enjoy them within the time constraints that I have. Some times I might be in the mood for a difficult slog or grind, other times I may just want to progress quickly in the 20 minutes of playing time that I have. Let me make that choice. I find it unforgiveable when a game forces me to play at its pre-determined pace and I lose progress due to inadequate save options. As an adult, I cannot afford to replay the same game segments time and again like I could a teenager.

    its not about age - I honestly think its about genre - Persona as an example is invariably linked to highschool students it seems - Xenoblade we watched some characters age thoughout the series (no spoilers) - Dragon Age had older characters to create if you wanted to - but again I think it comes down to finding the genre that suits you and even trying new things from time to time - JRPGs seem to be about growing up and dealing with issues and a wider story arc about overcoming something greater than yourself with the help of friends (or foes) - great vid Fem!!!

    I think there are so many game makers that there are games made for me, but I'm not the target demo. My kid played fortnite years ago and most of his allowance went to that game. I realized I paid for that game than any I've owned. I will always find a good game to play but I think gaming is still aimed a teenage crowd.

  • @DrGamingPlays
    @DrGamingPlays 12 годин тому

    I started playing games when I was about 10 years old (so Atari 2600/Colecovision, etc) and games then were definitely targeted to a younger crowd (there were exceptions of course). So, I think through the 8 bit through 16 bit era, the games kind of did grow up with those playing them, though the more mature rated stuff tended to be on the Genesis. Then you have the Playstation, and as an example, two Persona games with high school kids. Persona 6 will probably feature high school kids. It is a trope that gets a wee bit tiresome at times, but I think generally, games are going to target that 14-45 year old demographic like they always have. That is were the money is to be made, so I don't ever expect many games with 50-60 year olds as the principal characters (sorry for the ramble... I hope that made sense).

    When I was a kid I played a lot of Mario games or JRPG’s. Then in high-school Halo and Call of Duty was popular. I switched to those games, thinking I’ve grown up. Then after college and after getting that career job I picked up a Nintnedo Switch and it reignited my love for Nintendo and JRPG’s. I’m now 37 and I don’t care what people think anymore. Life can be crushing, so it’s nice to return to the good old faithful friend…Nintendo or any JRPG.

    Love this topic. I'm 59. Star Wars came out on my 12th birthday. I played in arcades every chance I could get. Our family had Pong. Lol. Atari, Coleco, PC. Owned every generation. My 5 kids all play video games. Our family sharing Steam Library is huge.While I could play platformers and shooters when I was younger, today it's mostly JRPGs and Indies. I have hand issues. I can't hit precise button presses. I play at least an hour a day but long play sessions don't work. I love handhelds. Switch and Steam Deck are my favorites. I look forward to hearing how gaming grows with your family. Best entertainment value. Appreciate your videos.

    I’m 64 and I’ve had one console or another ( okay, more often than not, multiple consoles) since 1986. And I’m not stopping. While my interests and tastes have changed over the years, my love for gaming has not. And it was funny when you referenced a 60 year old playing a game in 1990, because that would have been my mom. Though she made me go to EB to buy her games for her, lol. But she was playing home console games before I was. She had an Intellivision in 1981 and was an early buyer of the NES (and subscriber to Nintendo Power). She kept playing games until shortly before she passed in 2003. But she also made me promise to finish the couple of games she was in the middle of at that time. Which I did. She loved gaming! And it’s been my pleasure of passing that love down to my kids. Great video and thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    I think games will continue to grow with us. I've heard (but I can't confirm) that there's a big emphasis in Japanese culture on youth, which would explain why so many JRPGs tend to have very young protagonists, but I wonder if that will change as the population continues to age and developers along with them.

Persona 5, final fantasy 10, dragonquest 11 etc. The only senior i can think of would be Snake in Metal gear solid 4... I havent had issues yet getting into younger characteurs like persona 5, sea of stars or watching anime like Clannad/kanon 2016 andsoforth. The oldest characteur i ever played as was as a kid with Scrooge mcduck in Ducktales for NES, ironic that now that im older i play games with younger cast then when i was a kid.

    36 here and have been gaming since I was like 2 or 3. There are dozens and dozens of games already that appeal to older people. Many point and click adventure games, horror games, puzzle games, and rpgs already appeal to older audiences. There is an endless list of games with more mature themes and aged characters that can appeal to anyone over the age of 25. I think as the age of people playing continues to go up we will only see more and more of that. With that said ill always enjoy games aimed at a younger audience (within reason) since the lighthearted nature and exploration of basic themes keeps me young and reminds me of the basics. Dont get me wrong though a silent hill, eternal darkness, might and magic, or journeyman project type game will always be welcome for the more mature themes but staying young at heart will continue to be important to me as well

    More, more, more. As long as the industry continues to boom, there will be more options for both young and mature audiences. Games like The Witcher 3 are great at finding a sweet spot for everyone. Teens love action, mythology, etc., and adults can connect with the parental aspect of the story.
